How do I fight a surprise medical bill?

Negotiate the bill.

There are a few ways to do this if you're stuck with an unexpected out-of-network bill. First, call the insurer and ask whether it will consider a one-time exception and agree to cover the bill at the in-network rate. If that doesn't work, you can file an appeal.

Whether by accident or intentionally, medical billing and coding errors are common reasons that claims are rejected or denied. Information may be incorrect, incomplete or missing. You will need to check your billing statement and EOB very carefully.

What if I can't afford my medical bills?

If you can't afford to pay even a percentage of your full bill immediately, try asking for a 25% discount if you make a large down payment now. A less aggressive strategy is to ask if the provider will charge you a discounted fee.

Do hospitals write off unpaid medical bills?

Many factors go into how and if, a hospital writes off an individual's bill. Most hospitals categorize unpaid bills into two categories. Charity care is when hospitals write off bills for patients who cannot afford to pay. When patients who are expected to pay do not, their debts are known as bad debt. Amedical provider may choose to continue collection efforts through a third party.
